New additions to the I Need Money file — which is already quite a large file, indeed, thank you for asking — from the Christie’s Interiors auction in South Kensington on 2 May 2012.  With some estimated values as low as £300, I miiiiiight be able to convince my pocketbook to make an exception for a small piece of film history.

To Auction: The Lalique Mascot Collection of Ele Chesney

29/02/2012 § 3 Comments

Available for the winning from RM Auctions on March 10 in Amelia Island, Florida, is the gorgeous thirty piece Lalique auto mascot collection of the foremost female collector of antique automobiles, Ele Chesney.  Popular in the 1920s and 1930s, mascots were made to fit snugly into radiator caps, adding a bit of artistic expression to the bonnet of the car.  Because of the high temperatures of the radiator, and their exposure to the elements and flying debris, the number of mascots in the kind of pristine condition like Chesney’s are rare indeed.  Made by renowned master glassmaker Lalique, the collection contains a few exceptionally rare pieces, such as the Renard (the fox) shown above — only seven of them are known to exist in the world.

A gorgeous art deco treasure trove!  Halfsies, anyone?
