Day 18: Disconnect
Today’s tip is short and sweet.  Make sure that you make regular time for yourself to disconnect.  This means silence your phone’s ringing, cease your text messaging, get rid of that computer on your lap in bed, get off of Facebook.  Put your phone down — maybe turn it off.  Yes, really.  In this overstimulated world, it is important to take a few precious moments to disengage from everything.  Think of it as a breath of fresh air for your dwindling attention span — and a rest for your strained eyes and overworked thumbs.  A classy and fabulous life is one with an inherent sense of balance, and balance is impossible if you cannot tear yourself away from Angry Birds.

There are small ways to keep oneself from being ruled by the constant onslaught of instant communications.  I know a couple that has instituted the “no laptops in bed” rule, which helps them to wind down before bed and actually encourages them to talk before falling asleep (imagine!).  I have a colleague that refuses to hook up her work email to her personal blackberry.  My mother refuses to take calls after 9pm.  A friend of mine leaves his mobile phone in his car every night.  Strive for a bit of quietude as often as possible, be it a full 24 hours, an evening, or just an hour.  Your peace of mind is definitely worth it.
