The American Girl {Karen Walker RTW S/S 2012}

I have a confession to make…

…I have something of an innate aversion to most patterns.  Most.  There are a few automatic exceptions to this rule, while all others are considered on a case-by-case basis.  Usually they don’t make the cut and I’m not sure why this is the case.  In any event,  Karen Walker‘s S/S 2012 collection has me questioning my bias, because she sent more than a few gorgeously patterned pieces down the runway that have my full attention.  Don’t get me wrong, there were a few things that got vetoed…but no need to include them here.

Notice also the Mildred Pierce effect.  Enthralled!  Would you have thought that a film released on cable could have such influence?  The Karen Walker woman is strong, independent and bold.  She mixes patterns.  She likes a good bit of menswear influence and big colorful sunnies.  This Kiwi designer entitled her collection “The American Girl” and I think she hit the nail on its 1940s head.

These clothes have me thinking of Katharine Hepburn.  Always a good sign.

Neckerchief, pleated cropped trouser, tassels.

Peplum, head scarf…pattern I don’t hate.  Wait, what?!?

While I don’t think that Ms. Walker has changed  Mr. Wu’s spot as the current king of the NYFW hill, I do realize that Mr. Lauren presents tomorrow morning.  When it comes to Ralphie, you know I can almost never say no.  As long as he doesn’t use any strange patterns, that is…
