A Murmuration

Okay, yes, I may be cheating a wee bit, as I already put this on my Tumblr, but this murmuration of starlings over the River Shannon in Ireland is so amazing I wanted to post it here too.  The girls in the rowboat are completely adorable, as well.  I’m trying to figure a way to ask/force them to take me camping in Ireland with them.

For a bit more on the surprisingly complex science behind this phenomena,  which“are best described with equations of “critical transitions” — systems that are poised to tip, to be almost instantly and completely transformed, like metals becoming magnetized or liquid turning to gas,” head over to Wired.
