In My Closet || J.Crew Malta Sandals In My Closet || J.Crew Malta Sandals

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have noticed a certain kind of sandal has been in heavy rotation lately.  The J.Crew Malta sandal is perfect.  Flat with two leather straps, they are refreshingly simple and as my friend Lani put it “as close to Birkenstocks as I’ll ever come.”  Gotten for a song during their summer sale in both black and silver metallic, these beauties are a bit harder to find sizes in this late in the season, but if you can make it happen, you totally should.

Have a lovely weekend! M. xx

NYFW Post-script: Marissa Webb Spring/Summer 2013

29/10/2012 § Leave a comment

Just a short post-script on a lovely collection I missed seeing during NYFW.  Marissa Webb, the eponymous line by the former head of womenswear design at J.Crew, takes the best of the iconic classics she perfected over 11 years at the helm of the national brand and adds just the right amount of maturity and edge.  Her premier collection is tailored without sacrificing femininity, and best of all, features more than a few ties.  She has some beautiful prints, but I really find myself drawn to the monochrome suits and the solid contrast looks — the red suit and the black and white dress are definitely the high notes.  See the full lookbook here.

I’m still unaware of the stockists at this point, but definitely watch this space.
Marissa Webb is showing all signs of being a longtime favorite.

Acne Mape cropped lizard-embossed leather jacket
Tory Burch Samantha sweater
McQ Alexander McQueen tartan wool mini skirt
Eugenia Kim Gabriella feather trimmed rabbit-felt fedora
Tory Burch fox head hinge bracelet
J.Crew cashmere-lined leather gloves
J.Crew Brompton hobo
Sam Edelman Petty Kid suede ankle boot
J.Crew solid opaque tights

For me, fall doesn’t really begin until I’ve got my first pair of tights on for the season, and guess what?  Today was that day.  In honor of fall’s arrival, an outfit with just the right amount of schoolgirl gone bad and a few foxes thrown in for good measure.  I’m especially drawn to the richness of deep jewel tones this fall and am in love with the burgundy and green here.  The Acne moto jacket is the obvious budget-killer here, but I couldn’t resist  You can find a similar and much more affordable and non-leather option here, if either qualities are more desirable to you — but alas, no green.

What’s keeping me busy around the city this week?  Quite a few things, indeed!  I will be catching Grace Kelly in Hitchcock’s Dial M for Murder (in 3-D!) at Film Forum before it closes,  a champagne-infused girldate at The Drybar in Flatiron, an opening reception for artist John Whitlock at Goose Barnacle in Brooklyn on Thursday (details here), a record release party for the country duo The Vanity Belles (tickets here) and a happy hour or two.  I’m definitely in need of a pair of boots made for walking like those gorgeous Sam Edelmans above.  Love!

Have a lovely week!

A weekend for a little of this, and a little of that…

Ray-Ban Meteor sunglasses
J. Crew Liberty perfect shirt in green pink floral
Vince drawstring short
Gap embroidered loafers (only $40!)
Billykirk No. 235 leather tote

I intend to savor this weekend as much as possible, since it’s just starting to settle in my brain that summer is creeping to a close.  With a bit of effort I will eat my avocado toast out in front of local, meander along the nearly seven miles of Summer Streets, ride my bike once or twice, and spend some quality time with a book that I’ve been nursing (hopefully in a shady patch of Central Park).

Aspirational goal: successfully recreating a recipe from my newest Pinterest board, “Mariah Can’t Cook.”  Just please don’t judge me if it happens to be a cocktail…

Have a lovely weekend!

QC Prêt-à-Porter || Perfectly Neutral

03/08/2012 § Leave a comment

Clean.  Basic.  Neutral.  Perfect.

Vintage Ray-Ban sunglasses
J.Crew perfect linen shirt
Jenni Kayne d’orsay flat in linen
Mulberry braided belt
Current/Elliot boyfriend cropped jeans
Timex x J.Crew vintage army steel watch
MANGO bi-colour shopper

While some cloudy days can definitely make me yearn for bright colors, there can be something perfect about embracing a minimalist palette.  This unfussy outfit makes me want to sip tea and curl up with the Sunday Times while listening to Morrissey, and then head uptown for a spot of lunch at J.G. Melon and a long overdue visit to the Frick.  And if these clouds keep up, this fantasy might just become a reality this weekend.

Have a lovely weekend!

QC Prêt-à-Porter || Take Me Out To The Ball Game

05/07/2012 § 2 Comments

A weekend to enjoy the Great American Pastime…

Hers:
Gucci straw boat hat
Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses
J.Crew Brompton raffia and leather clutch
K Jacques St Tropez Epicure multi-strap sandals
T by Alexander Wang racerback jersey tank
J.Crew Dapper striped linen-blend shorts

His:
J.Crew lightweight gingham check cotton shirt
J.Crew Stanton cotton chino shorts
Ebbets Field Flannels twill ball cap
Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses
James Perse cotton t
Jack Purcell cotton-twill sneakers

This was a strange week, indeed.  With a midweek day off and our *third* heatwave of the summer (I’m no meteorologist, but err, maybe this is just…summer?) I spent a fun Fourth of July at a barbecue or two, sweating profusely.  So this weekend, with a trip to the ball game planned, as well as a day at the beach, my outfit choices are all about comfort and style at high temps.  I love the orange with the navy here, and those striped linen shorts are perfection for sitting in the stands and on the sand.

Aspirational goals include wearing a foam finger, purchasing new beach towels (I quite like these red striped ones, which you can monogram for just $6 extra!) and wearing my hair curly for a change.

You’ll also notice a matching “His” this week — although you could definitely catch me in either of these outfits, by the bye — something new I wanted to try out.  As I am somewhat sure I might have some male readers, I thought they might feel a bit left out looking at clutch bags all the time.

Here’s to a grand weekend!
What are you getting up to?

A weekend to celebrate Dads of all sorts…

Equipment washed silk shirt
J.Crew Faille mini skirt
Illesteva detachable front tortie sunglasses
Proenza Schouler PS1 leather and twill belt
J.Crew Biennal satchel in blue sea
Ralph Lauren Brenna II suede and mesh wingtips

I must note that the J.Crew skirt above is massively — and universally — flattering.  I own it in a different color, but I suddenly feel an urgent need to get it in red as well…

On the docket for the weekend:  Calling up my Dad, catching The Little Black Jacket in SoHo before it closes, dinner with a friend who is visiting from out of town, and working on bettering my pace with the Nike+ GPS app.  Aspirational goals include: catching up on the Mad Men finale, which I missed (horrors!) and the Winston Churchill exhibition, Churchill: The Power of Words, at the Morgan Library.  Oh, and tacos.  Tacos are always on the wishlist…

Have a lovely weekend!

QC Prêt-à-Porter || Brimfield Bound

11/05/2012 § 1 Comment

A weekend to wander a few antique-strewn fields in New England.
By now, Ralph’s creative services team has already swept through,
so try comfort yourself as you dig through their cast-offs.

Apesi field jacket (mens)*
J.Crew Blythe blouse in pink
Oliver Peoples Sheldrake sunglasses
J.Crew windowpane scarf
J.Crew Abingdon waxed cotton tote (only $100!)
PF Flyers Sumfun lo in black canvas
Citizens of Humanity Elson straight leg jeans
Panasonic Lumix digital camera like this one
Lots and lots of cash (Dame Bassey knows what’s up)

Additional inclement weather ingredients to include:
This jacket by Brooks Brothers (mens, currently on sale!)
My green Hunter wellies

* It’s worth noting that because I only use item shots without a background (or a person wearing the item) in my collages, I’m really limited by what I can choose.  Please don’t think I mean to recommend you must drop nearly a thousand dollars on a field jacket.  It’s a great jacket and if you can afford it, by all means — but I definitely can’t.  See more affordable jacket options here and here

This weekend I am very excited to make my annual trip to the Brimfield Antique Show with Lani!  I will also spend time in Cambridge and Boston, is there anything I should do or see?

Have a lovely weekend!

Weekend Walkabout

13/11/2011 § 6 Comments

Fall is in full swing in New York and I just spent a brisk autumnal weekend rambling around Manhattan and Brooklyn.  With the dropping temperatures and cool winds, a bit of layering was in order and I topped it off with my new Camden wool pea coat by Rugby — a handsome, double-breasted wool coat with gold, eagle-embossed buttons.  Duly appealing to both my military inclinations and my horsey sensibilities, I can already tell I am going to get a lot of use from this lovely coat.  I especially love the slight A-line shape and subtle chevron stitching on the sleeves.

I am a bit amazed at how much I managed to cram in this weekend.  I dropped by the Morgan Library and Museum, to see the exhibit on French drawings from the revolutionary period (if you haven’t ever seen Pierpont Morgan’s 1906 library you definitely must go).  I also visited the Brooklyn Flea (where I picked up a lovely stirrup, natch), wandered around the sculpture garden at the Pratt Institute and saw the American Art in the Twenties exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum.  I enjoyed a lovely breakfast in Tribeca with Sarah, who was a dear and took these pictures of me.
