At The Weekend
14/01/2013 § 8 Comments
A few scenes from the weekend, spent kicking around
the city in rather unseasonably warm weather…

Happened upon the Bloomingdale branch (c.1898)
of the New York Free Circulating Library.
The best kind of tents and street style photographers
flocked to Lincoln Center this weekend.
As I mentioned, I made it to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts for an excellent exhibit on Katharine Hepburn’s costumes for stage and screen. Incidentally, I discovered I had unwittingly purchased the accompanying book some months back: Katharine Hepburn: Rebel Chic. Do give it a look, it’s quite good — especially if you didn’t make it to the exhibit!

While there was plenty to love about the exhibit, my absolute favorite part was when I overheard an older couple discussing the trousers that Katharine tended to wear. The wife, who you can see above, wore a fedora and what looked like a man’s overcoat. When she said she wanted a pair of pants just like Katharine, her husband immediately said that he thought she would look amazing in them. Sort of completely made my day.
On my way to catch Amour at Film Forum (which I highly recommend!), I nipped into the newly opened Houston Hall to sample some of their house drafts. Not only is it a formerly abandoned FBI garage complete with exposed trusses and industrial touches, it’s also the largest — and prettiest! — beer garden I can think of downtown. The Standard had better watch their back.
Flat whites at Laughing Man Marketplace in Tribeca.

Hope you had a lovely weekend!

Après Sandy

Just a quick note to let you know that I am safe and sound after Sandy passed through New York last night. The city definitely feels like it is reeling from a massive shock. I had been forced to evacuate from my apartment on Sunday because I live in one of the low lying areas (my building’s lobby is still currently flooded), but as it turned out, I needed to relocate again today, due to the massive power outage in Manhattan below 34th Street and the fact that we lost water and cell phone service as well. I have since settled into my old neighborhood — and quasi-ancestral homeland — The Upper East Side.
After being plunged into the dark last night when power was lost, and with virtually no way of hearing the news, my friends and I settled in for an eerily zen-like few hours by candlelight, while Sandy howled outside. Being in the middle of a huge event, without any access to the outside world, was disconcerting and I am thankful that I was with friends.
By now you have probably seen the devastating pictures of the damage. If you would like to help, I urge you to make a donation to the American Red Cross.
I hope you are safe and well, wherever you are.
NYFW Recap: Samantha Pleet S/S 2013

Loving the S/S 2013 Samantha Pleet collection! Called the “Sands of Time” and drawing inspiration from the ancient civilizations of the Fertile Crescent and the 19th century adventurers who discovered them, Pleet’s collection is whimsically detailed and utilizes some very gorgeous prints. And I quite obviously lost my mind at the sight of the shorts suit above — amazing! The presentation was held at the gorgeous Wolverine Company Store that has been popped up in Nolita, against a backdrop that echoed the stratified landscape of ancient Mesopotamia.
I was also excited to get a sneak peek at the new S/S Samantha Pleet for Wolverine 1000 Mile collaboration that includes sandals, boots and oxfords. I can already tell those turquoise lovelies are poised to be quite a hit — mark my words!

Louis Vuitton City Guides 2013: New York City

It’s always a favorite time of year for me when details about the annual Louis Vuitton City Guides — and their accompanying video clips — start to emerge from the ether, but when the House of Vuitton decides to feature New York City first, it’s a double win. In its fourteenth year of publication, the Guides offer the discerning traveller expert advice on a select group of cities in the Americas, Europe and Asia.
Kicking off the 2013 guides in a perfect marriage of travel and cocktailing,* we find ourselves in hot pursuit of a perfect Manhattan in Manhattan — a shaken cocktail that has shown remarkable staying power since its invention at the Manhattan Club in 1870 — we visit Jimmy at the James Hotel, Le Bain at the The Standard Hotel, The Summit Bar on the Lower East Side and Amor y Amargo in the East Village.
I don’t know about you, but my watch definitely just hit cocktail o’ clock.
*probably not a word, but should be.
NYFW Recap: Nonoo S/S 2013

To kick off my coverage of New York Fashion Week,
one of my very favorite collections: Nonoo.
Designer Misha Nonoo and Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo.
As I stepped into the Nonoo presentation at Milk, I was pleasantly surprised to hear tropical music. Peeking around a throng of fans that included Olivia Palermo, Linda Fargo of Bergdorf Goodman, Jamie Beck and Leandra Medine, I discovered designer Misha Nonoo’s amazing Spring Summer 2013 collection — and promptly fell in love. Drawing inspiration from the faded beauty of Cuba, the collection deftly balances elegance with whimsy amidst a richly saturated palette and some very gorgeous prints. The lace! The flamingos! The Supergas!
Smartly tailored, vintage inspired, and more than a bit Wallis Simpson in the Bahamas, Nonoo Spring/Summer 2013 is glamorous and casually refined. Perfect for a weekend jaunt to the Caribbean…or just kicking around the West Village.
I’ll take it all, thanks.
Be sure to pop by Nonoo.

At the Jazz-Age Lawn Party

A few photos from my trip to the Jazz-Age Lawn Party on Governors Island over the weekend. I hadn’t been since year before last and it was simply remarkable to see how much the event has grown in that time. While the lines have gotten longer and space on the lawn has gotten scarcer, this event still remains one of my favorite New York things to do. Even if you lack a straw boater or a strand of pearls, I definitely recommend checking it out next summer (held in July and August, more info here). It is a lovely time.
Summer on Long Island

For a perfect summer on Long Island, you’ll need a healthy serving of golf, a few polo ponies, a couple of playboys and a sailboat or two — be sure to add in a country club membership, if you’ve got one handy. Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass. Serve via private seaplane, natch.

Summer in the City

In between cold beverages (there were many) and a little Olympics viewing (probably more than a little) and one well-deserved nap (definitely deserved), I kicked around Washington Square Park for a bit over the hot hot hot weekend. Understandably, because of the blistering heat, I did find the park somewhat emptier than usual, but nonetheless full of lovely, summery things to see. Sidenote: I’m not sure if I’m including the guy covered in pigeons…
