Style RouletteStyle Roulette || Flying Tiger

Style Roulette: One item, two distinct styles.
Round 2: Étoile Isabel Marant Crisi boots

Styled by myself, and Lani of Mon Petit Chou Chou, my good friend and frequent partner in Brimfield and New York Fashion Week hijinks.  While we’ve been fast friends since the day we met, and our personal styles do have a few convergence points, I’ve always appreciated Lani’s bold approach to fashion.  While I tend to the more classic and relaxed, Lani loves vibrant contrast and drama.  Be sure to hop on over to her site to see her entry too!

From top L to R:
Rag & Bone Roseburg coat

J.Crew western denim shirt
Kenzo Flying Tiger pullover
Cosabella Kitty bralette
Vanessa Bruno Athé leather skirt
Étoile Isabel Marant Crisi boots
Jerome Dreyfuss suede Igor bag
Isabel Marant Drake scarf

Denim, leather, camel, suede and tigers.  These are a few of my favorite things.  There’s just something about a full-length coat and a teeny tiny miniskirt that I will always love.  Throw in some flying tigers and I won’t be able to resist.  Kitty love notwithstanding, I’d normally be a bit leery of such a bold print, but with this color palette and that gorgeous topcoat the tigers become a bit more subdued — they function more as leitmotif than overture.  Meow.

Welcome to the inaugural edition of Style Roulette!
One item, two distinct styles.

For our first selection, a pair of Harvey Faircloth lace shorts. While I tend to the more classic and relaxed, Lani loves vibrant contrast and drama — as you’ll notice from our very first round of Roulette!

Be sure to hop on over to her site to see her entry.

I envisioned this as a sort of off-duty uniform for long rambles about the city.  The kind of late summer afternoon hours that easily slip into evening without you even noticing.  As is my wont, I wanted to relax the lace — surprisingly, meditation didn’t work — and thought an easy silk shirt and slip-ons would do the trick.  I’m also completely obsessed with all the Mougin & Picard watches for J.Crew, but this Grande Seconde is my absolute favorite.

What’s probably most interesting to note is that while Lani and I refrained from peeking at each other’s selections until we were finished, we both somehow paired the lace with leopard.  Odd coincidence or next big thing?  I’ll let you be the judge…

From top L-R:
Equipment Signature washed silk shirt in bright white
Harvey Faircloth lace shorts in navy
Mougin & Picard for J.Crew Grande Seconde watch in cream
Gap animal print slip-on sneakers
Clare Vivier Bando tote in cognac
Orly Genger by Jaclyn Mayer Roxbury Necklace in Violet

What a busy few days I’ve had!  Between moving apartments, my computer deciding to go on strike and…well, just life, I’ve been a little quiet as of late.  My sincerest apologies!  I’ve got a terrifically full week this week, but I will be doing my best to keep up with you.  I’m most excited about settling into my new place (!!) and a road trip to Nashville (!!!), but we can talk more about all that later.

In the meantime, I’ve been overtaken with a restless spirit that seems to have been brought on by the slow procession of spring and my recent trip to Los Angeles.  I’m dreaming of wide open spaces and the wind in my hair, which is reflected in my spring kit that you see above, as well as my Tumblr (which you can see below).

QC Tumblr

While I’ve been in the wind (and at times without a computer and/or internet — imagine that!), I’ve found that I can at least keep up with Tumblr with my phone, so if ever you wonder where I’ve gotten off to, it’s a good place to check in with me.

Hope all is well with you!
xoxo. M.

Nothing like a pair of white jeans to get you in the mood for warmer climates.  With my upcoming trip to Los Angeles this weekend (a bit more on that later), I’m definitely breaking that old “no white pants before Memorial Day” rule.  Just you wait and see.

bits and bobs for your weekend wander

  • Explore the cult of British designer Margaret Howell, via WSJ Magazine.
  • Fernet Branca is the equivalent of a hipster bartender handshake (and did you know that San Francisco ingests more of the stuff than Buenos Aires?!?).  A quick guide to Fernet, via Bon Appetit.
  • Patrick Robinson, formerly of Gap, is launching Pashko, his own collection of athletically-inclined comfy clothes “to hang out in” — with your help.  Using a Kickstarter campaign, Robinson plans to only make the items that people “order” via the crowd-funding mechanism, and after the initial funds are raised, turn Pashko into an e-commerce business, via NY Times.
  • Yasmin Sewell looking amazing per usual, via Vanessa Jackman.
  • Thom Browne is amused by what you think his outrageous show concepts mean, but he’s actually too busy building a business to pay you too much mind, via Business of Fashion.
  • I am a little bit (TOTALLY) obsessed by the idea of staying in this amazing Airstream on the ocean side of Highway 1 in Big Sur.  Okay, completely obsessed.
  • Peruse the Windows of New York.
  • Who exactly is the “average guy” when discussing what men wear (and #menswear)?  Via Robert, for GoLocalProv.
  • Stephanie always finds the most amazing things. For example: this portrait from the Cleveland Museum of Art.
  • Moynat, a french trunk-maker and leather goods company founded by a woman in 1849, provides a lovely bit of illustrated inspiration for your next trip to Paris:

Quite Continental: Allez Les Bleus

Nothing like a flash of spring to inspire a bit of wishful thinking:
WHARF “ONE” women’s chambray shirt, blue
Mother of Pearl Spirea printed silk crepe de chine skirt
Stella McCartney Clara Whispering lace bra and silk thong
Aurélie Bidermann Santa Fe braided cotton and gold-plated necklace
Elizabeth and James Carri T-strap sandals
A.P.C. Minimal bag

On the docket:
Blues for Smoke at the Whitney Museum
Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity at The Metropolitan Museum
Whiskey and a traditional Irish seisiún at The Dead Rabbit

If you live in New York, you probably took one look at the outfit above and wondered where exactly I would like to wear it, considering the all-day dusting of snow we received on Friday.  But when you consider the near sixty degree Saturday we had, perhaps you might be willing to indulge my rather wishful warm weather thoughts.  And who knows, perhaps a trip to a more tropical region is in order…?

Have a lovely week!

Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power by Jon Meacham

This weekend I plan to use the rainy days to my full advantage.  I’ll hop uptown for an exhibit on the costumes and personal style Katharine Hepburn, then come back downtown for a screening of Amour, which recently garnered a Best Actress Oscar nomination for Emmanuelle Riva’s performance (Riva also starred in one of my very favorite films, Hiroshima mon amour).  This outfit would be perfectly cozy for traipsing about this weekend, and I even included a charcoal version of my new favorite Pendleton hat (on sale!).

Quite Continental Breakfast:
Sidenote: Quite Continental Breakfast is something that I used to put together a while back and have decided to revive.  It’s a shortlist of items I’ve collected over the week that probably won’t warrant a post on QC, but I thought they might prove interesting for your weekend perusal.  Have something to recommend? Please definitely send it my way!

  • The Economist recommends you read my firm’s annual report on the top geopolitical risks for the year with a stiff whisky.  I shan’t disagree with that.  You can find the report here.
  • Have spent many, many minutes perusing the beautiful and unique travel destinations on Welcome Beyond.  Definitely check out the Treehotel, a property in North Sweden that is made up entirely of tree houses!
  • Quite enjoyed these photos of gangster Mickey Cohen and wife at home in Los Angeles in 1949, via LIFE.  Cohen served as the real-life inspiration for Sean Penn’s character in the film Gangster Squad, which opened today.  Also, did you know one of Mickey’s henchmen, Johnny Stompanato, was stabbed to death by the 14 year-old daughter of Lana Turner? Me neither!
  • Former Menswear Crush Hackett London had their first-ever show this week. You can view their perfectly British Autumn/Winter 2013 collection via Vogue UK.
  • Completely obsessed with the photography of African cultures by Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher.  Especially the pictures of the Dinka people of South Sudan — AMAZING!
  • A bit of vintage interior inspiration, in the form of a converted warehouse via HouseToHome.
  • Lastly, an amusing little alphabetical list of important architects and their best known building.

Have a lovely weekend!
xoxo.  M.
