NYFW Recap: Nonoo S/S 2013

14/09/2012 § 1 Comment

To kick off my coverage of New York Fashion Week,
one of my very favorite collections: Nonoo.

Designer Misha Nonoo and Bergdorf Goodman’s Linda Fargo.

As I stepped into the Nonoo presentation at Milk, I was pleasantly surprised to hear tropical music.  Peeking around a throng of fans that included Olivia Palermo, Linda Fargo of Bergdorf Goodman, Jamie Beck and Leandra Medine, I discovered designer Misha Nonoo’s amazing Spring Summer 2013 collection — and promptly fell in love.  Drawing inspiration from the faded beauty of Cuba, the collection deftly balances elegance with whimsy amidst a richly saturated palette and some very gorgeous prints.  The lace!  The flamingos!  The Supergas!

Smartly tailored, vintage inspired, and more than a bit Wallis Simpson in the Bahamas, Nonoo Spring/Summer 2013 is glamorous and casually refined.  Perfect for a weekend jaunt to the Caribbean…or just kicking around the West Village.
I’ll take it all, thanks.

Be sure to pop by Nonoo.

School Spirited: The Vassar-Yale Bike Race, 1952

11/09/2012 § 1 Comment

The first crisp post-Labor Day weather has arrived in New York City and I was pleased to slip into a bit of tweed today — after roundly debating for a good three precious morning minutes on whether this would turn out to be a premature move, natch.  Happy to say that it was a perfectly sunny, briskly breezy transitional day and it put me in a proper “back to school” mood.  I almost felt like buying a new pencil box.

Completely apropos of the weather, my school spirit and my tweed, are these great photos from the 1952 Vassar-Yale Bike Race from the Life Archive.  A bit of astute Googling revealed that the lovely author Rebecca C. Tuite has written a great post for Ivy Style about the short-lived race, which began as a drunken wager, evolved into drunken debacle and was eventually shut down by school authorities for the greater good.  Thankfully, Life Magazine photographer Yael Joel was there to capture the shenanigans so that we might enjoy them today.  I don’t know about you, but my need for a new pair of Weejuns for the fall has definitely been intensified.

At the Jazz-Age Lawn Party

22/08/2012 § 6 Comments

A few photos from my trip to the Jazz-Age Lawn Party on Governors Island over the weekend.  I hadn’t been since year before last and it was simply remarkable to see how much the event has grown in that time.  While the lines have gotten longer and space on the lawn has gotten scarcer, this event still remains one of my favorite New York things to do.  Even if you lack a straw boater or a strand of pearls, I definitely recommend checking it out next summer (held in July and August, more info here).  It is a lovely time.

Summer in Southern California

21/08/2012 § 1 Comment

For a perfect summer in Southern California, you’ll need golden light, a ton of palm trees, broad white beaches, a polka dot bikini, a beach shanty, some zinc oxide and a group of your closest surfing friends.  Add a dash of PCH, a little rum, some ice and blend it all on high.

For the second half of August, I’ve decided to turn my sights back to the coast I know best — the west.  While I may currently live on the east coast, and have quite an admiration for all things Northeast, summer will always mean very specific things to this California girl.  These photos taken along the So Cal coastline, from Malibu to San Onofre State Beach in Oceanside, were just the ticket.

Words || Richard Avedon

Too good to not share.
Let’s promise to not wait for our Mondays anymore.

“I believe in maniacs. I believe in type As. I believe that you’ve got to love your work so much that it is all you want to do. I believe you must betray your mistress for your work, you betray your wife for your work; I believe that she must betray you for her work. I believe that work is the one thing in the world that never betrays you, that lasts. If I were going to be a politician, if I were going to be a scientist, I would do it every day. I wouldn’t wait for Monday. I don’t believe in weekends.

If you’re headed for a life that’s only involved with making money and that you hope for satisfaction somewhere else, you’re headed for a lot of trouble. And whatever replaces vodka when you’re 45 is what you’re going to be doing.”

Summer on Long Island

13/08/2012 § 2 Comments

For a perfect summer on Long Island, you’ll need a healthy serving of golf, a few polo ponies, a couple of playboys and a sailboat or two — be sure to add in a country club membership, if you’ve got one handy.  Shake with ice and strain into a martini glass.  Serve via private seaplane, natch.

At Home With Ms. Issa

Loved this glimpse into the home of Caroline Issa, the executive fashion director of Tank Magazine, photographed by Natalie Joos.  I’m a big fan of Issa’s style, which tends to combine unexpected elements with excellent tailoring, so when I happened to cross paths with her at the Rag & Bone F/W 2012 show, I came thisclose to making a bit of a fool of myself by proclaiming my admiration.  Thankfully, I managed to keep my cool.

I will admit that I expected Issa’s home to be much more colorful, but perhaps there is something kind of perfect about the whiteness of the space — a “less is more” approach that leaves plenty of room for Issa to push the boundaries with her personal style.

Summer in the City

In between cold beverages (there were many) and a little Olympics viewing (probably more than a little) and one well-deserved nap (definitely deserved), I kicked around Washington Square Park for a bit over the hot hot hot weekend.  Understandably, because of the blistering heat, I did find the park somewhat emptier than usual, but nonetheless full of lovely, summery things to see.  Sidenote: I’m not sure if I’m including the guy covered in pigeons…

Nacho in Bridgehampton

It’s been awhile since we’ve talked about polo but these gorgeously horsey photos of Argentine polo star and Ralph Lauren model Nacho Figueras, taken at Two Trees Farm in Bridgehampton, seemed like good reason to bring it up.  Even better?  There’s also a behind-the-scenes video clipYou’re welcome.
