Throwback Thursday || There Will Be Breweries (and Beards)

From the family archives: an amazing group portrait — which you must click to enlarge — featuring my great, great-grandfather Peter Joseph in New Orleans, sometime after the Civil War. A veteran, a civic leader and a policeman, he somehow also had the time to serve as foreman for a brewery built on Canal Street, and here he is pictured with his crew. You can find him either by the arrow penciled in on the photo, or you could just search for a masterful beard…
Very cool photo.
Fantastic photo. If you aren’t already aware of it, Peter Joseph’s role in post-bellum New Orleans politics is prominently featured in a recent historical work by Justin A. Nystrom, “New Orleans after the Civil War, Race, Politics, and a New Birth of Freedom (JHU press, 2010).

Wow, that’s great! I had no idea about the book. Thanks very much!
This man is also my 2nd great grandfather! And quite an enigma ! My oldest son, Montana , bears a rather startling resemblence to him, right down to the intense eyes .I am currently researching this side of the family , because there are some things about his. supposed father that just don’t signify, to say the least !Thank you so much for this gem of a post ! I never saw this picture and I am defenitely getting a different perspective on this dynamic , intriguing man ! Thanks again !
Amazing! Very welcome! Thank you for commenting!
And Leah, I believe that also makes us relations? This picture is from my mother’s private collection – she’s quite a genealogy buff herself. I’d love to put you in touch. Please email me? contact@quitecontinental.net
