Quiet, tailored and natural, photographer Nicole Bentley has captured exactly what I want my summer to feel like, look like, wear like…down to the wild hair and the amazing eyebrows.  Have we ever discussed my lackluster brows?  While my mother and sister have had to wage a lifelong battle with theirs, mine just decided to never show up.  Fact: I’ve never ever had them done, ever.  Rather, since I was old enough to care, I’ve filled them in using a variety techniques and have always harbored intense jealousy at those lucky to be born with “strong brows” like Jess here.  I suppose the grass truly is always greener…even when it comes to eyebrows.

So it’s officially April and I’m feeling optimistic.  Like warm weather and sunshine are just around the corner waiting for me.  With the worst winter in a record 40 years, New York has felt like a purgatory since…forever.  So to treat my slight case of seasonal depression I’ve prescribed myself a regular visit with these photographs by Matthew Williams for Elle Decoration UK of a gorgeous beach home in Brazil.  White walls, polished floors, weathered wood, all offset by the lushness of green fronds and lazy vines.

I want, I want, I want.  The only question left: who’s coming with me?

I am pleased to present the Harvey Faircloth FW 2014 look book, which I had the honor of shooting myself on Impossible Project polaroid film with a Polaroid Spectra ProCam.  Different from our past look books which are much more straightforward, our aim was to capture the essence of season’s inspiration: our Creative Director Christopher Rivers’ memories and favorite places of late night New York City during the late 1980s and early 1990s (“Bright Lights, Big City”).  Intimate and ephemeral, it has a undeniably voyeuristic quality — it almost feels like we’re following this girl on a nighttime prowl all over the city.

Working in Polaroid was challenging in a really great way.  Because the photographs take time to develop, I had to shoot and move on in the interest of time.  In an era of digital cameras and Photoshop, truly only having one chance was initially daunting but eventually liberating.  I first figured out how to focus and then shortly thereafter I found a way to trust myself.

I hope you enjoy it!

Dear Claire Dhelens,

As you are a French Voguette (a fashion and accessories editor to be precise), I was primed to be a fan.  In fact, I’m sorry that it has taken me so long to identify you among that amazing posse of black-clad, long-limbed ladies that traipse through the Tuileries.  I’ll admit that Emmanuelle and Capucine caught my attention first — je suis désolé!  But with your American west-themed editorial for the children’s supplement of French Vogue, you’ve got my attention.  In fact, you’ve even managed to get me to post pictures of kids on here.  No mean feat, let me tell you.  This happens virtually never.

Bisous,M.

With that said, I’ll just allow everyone else to enjoy these lovely photos by Andreas Sjodin, styled by Mme. Dhelens.

Yep, it’s that time again. Even if you’re not headed to class today, there is an unmistakable sense of change in the air. While summer will always remain my absolute favorite season, there is something fresh about the transition to fall. It’s a clean slate; a new beginning that somehow feels different from the first of the year — perhaps because I always feel justified in refreshing my wardrobe in the spirit of “back to school” shopping.

In keeping with that spirit, today I’ve got some great photos taken by Peter Stackpole at the University of Arizona in 1947 for Life Magazine. Why?  First of all, I really shouldn’t have to justify this.  Did you miss how awesome these girls are? But more importantly because, yes, even cowgirls go back to school too.

Happy
September.

I discovered an exciting bit of news today!  In an effort to encourage the free exchange of works of art, The Getty has placed online over 4,600 high resolution images of artwork in the museum’s collection as part of their Open Content Program.  As long as they are properly attributed (see below), the images are available for anyone to use, publish or modify for any purpose.   The collection currently contains a wide range of media, everything from paintings to manuscripts to sculpture, including these amazing pictures taken by Walker Evans in New York City during the 1920s and 1930s.

Find more information about Open Content at The Getty here and here.

Search the Open Content images yourself here.

Last but not least, you can see an earlier post about Walker Evans here.
